Timothy Leary Died Today

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Well, he died on May 31, 1996. I didn’t mean he died again. So, on the anniversary of ‘s death, I give you this documentary on LSD in four parts by filmmaker that gives you a pretty good history of the drug (found at ). After that is a short clip of some British troops who were used as Guinea pigs for experiments (from pyrodemon13 at ):

Finally, I found this of an interview with, I believe but am not certain, , who was one of Timothy Leary’s co-authors for the book . In the interview, he talks about his LSD experiences with Leary as well as the book:

Haditha – How To Make Terrorists

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

The that the White House promises that all the details from the investigation into the Haditha killings will be made public. Yeah, well, I won’t hold my breath. Congressman is all over this story (via rawstory at YouTube):

Here’s another clip with Murtha but also includes coverage of the story, which provides better objectivity and more depth than American news, as far as I’m concerned (via mbryan at ):

This is an report on the attack that features a child survivor (via AbuMustafa at YouTube):

Here’s a BBC piece that interviews Iraqi war veterans about killing civilians (via whatdoesitmatter at YouTube):

Murtha’s right to be outraged and to demand accountability. Not only is this emphatically not what we, as a country, are supposed to be about, but incidents such as these put our troops in more danger because of the hatred and justifiable rage they create in Iraqis. Incidents such as these and Abu Ghraib create terrorists.

Then there’s this typical right-wing nutjob:

Babe Ruth Newsreels

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

I thought I’d follow up my earlier with some clips of the legend he eclipsed, .  I put together this video compilation of newsreels I found featuring Babe Ruth:

This clip from at YouTube features a little kid striking out a marionnette Babe Ruth. It’s very well done as I guess it should be, because is very interested in marionnettes:

I don’t know the original context of this clip, but it appears to be a PSA of some kind that encourages kids to do well in school, with an assist from the Sultan of Swat (from TheDeputy04 at YouTube):

Finally, the official Babe Ruth site offers two Real Video streams worth checking out:

Barry Bonds Passes Babe Ruth

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

I know this is a little late but there’s usually a bit of a delay between a current event and when some video of the event gets posted. That, and, , I’m awfully ambivalent about passing with home run number 715.

I think he’s an amazingly talented baseball player. I don’t know if I can remember a player with such a good eye and with such patience and discipline at the plate. So with a player that good, it’s hard not to get caught up in the moment of a historic event:

forced to remove the clip of the broadcast. Wake up, you guys. Football has surpassed you as the national sport; a little free media might just help ticket sales. But they’ll probably complain about fan-generated clips next (found at YouTube from gotricekid):

This one’s has a little better angle, is a little closer and less shaky, and has a cute kid in it. I found it at from JH):

This is the guy who caught 715 (found at YouTube from jackpalance):

Yet, still, there are many who believe as I do that the record is tarnished because of his alleged steroid use. I believe he used the juice. And Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron did not. How’s that fair to them? Myneighborshateyou at is so incensed that he uploaded a protest video:

Memorial Day Video

Monday, May 29th, 2006

When I went searching for some appropriate video at and , all I really found were vacation videos of people’s Memorial Day weekends or Support Our Troops! tributes as if there’s someone out there who does not support them. What I didn’t find was any Memorial Day video that did justice to the holiday.

But then I thought will have something and of course it did. The thing that IFILM does better than any other video sharing/search site is they know how to categorize. Their Channels make finding video by theme simple. And one of the best things about the site is their with  conflict-specific video and, best of all, their with clips taken by our current troops.

They include the hilarious Iraqi Olympics…

And the horrific experiences of the Deuce Four unit ():

This is a trailer for an documentary called directed by John Hulme about his father Lieutenant Jack Hulme, a Marine who days before he was to depart to see his newborn son, was killed in Vietnam:

No Memorial Day would be complete without a reading of the most profound and transformative memorial to the war dead in our nation’s history, ‘s (read the Pulitzer Prize winning by for an analysis and history of the speech). Found  at from  :

Finally, as , US Army Band, on a B-flat Bach Stradivarius field trumpet.
