Billy Preston – The 5th Beatle, RIP
Billy Preston, the keyboardist many called the "Fifth Beatle," died yesterday in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 59. He wrote such 70s hits as "Nothing From Nothing" and the instrumental "Outa-Space," for which he won a Grammy; he also helped write Joe Cocker’s hit, "You Are So Beautiful." But he was legendary for his session work with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan.
This is a great clip of Preston playing "That’s The Way God Planned It" at George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh (from imlaobee at YouTube):
This clip is of Preston playing "Will It Go Round In Circles?" (Merry Swankster’s got an MP3 of the song) with Eric Clapton at the Staples Center in 2001 (from Iramirez64 at YouTube):
This clip is from the movie Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It’s Preston singing The Beatles’ "Get Back" (from Natah at YouTube):
There’s a reason they called him the Fifth Beatle. Here’s Preston doing his version of George Harrison’s song "My Sweet Lord" (from soulful at YouTube):
CybersMusic wrote a nice biographical post and there’s a photo slideshow of Billy Preston at Flickr.
