Video Of Sen. George Allen Using Racist Slur

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

In the following video, Virginia Republican Senator George Allen calls the videographer a "macaca," a term widely considered a racial slur. The Macaca is a species of monkey found in Asia.

The videographer, S.R. Sidarth, a volunteer for Allen’s Democratic opponent James Webb, was tasked with recording Allen’s public appearances, a common campaign tactic. Later in the video, Allen says to the crowd: “Give a welcome to macaca here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.”

Sidarth was born in Virginia but is of Indian descent. Allen apologized, saying he didn’t know what the word "Macaca" meant. B.S. The Senator was obviously playing racists and xeonphobia cards with his friendly crowd.

This is not Allen’s first brush with intolerance. As a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates, Allen opposed a state holiday honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; as Virginia’s governor, he proclaimed a Confederate History Month; and he also is fond of flying a Confederate flag in his home.

Will any of this hurt his reelection chances in Virginia? Probably not. But remember this when he runs for president.
