Fiona Apple – Across The Universe Video For Pleasantville
This is an absolutely beautiful rendition of The Beatles song Across The Universe sung by Fiona Apple for the movie Pleasantville (from TheGlassTorch at YouTube):
Pleasantville is one of my favorite movies for several reasons. The 1998 film features Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, and the late Don Knotts and is directed by Gary Ross, the same guy who did Seabiscuit.
The movie tells the tale of two modern twins (Maguire and Witherspoon) who are transported into the fictitious town of Pleasantville, the setting of a black and white 1950s TV show. Upon their arrival, the residents of Pleasantville begin to experience strong emotions which results in Pleasantville’s accepted norms being disrupted.
The film is fabulously edited by subtly introducing color into the black and white landscape of Pleasantville to highlight the changes that take place in characters.
And it is a wonderful commentary on conformism, groupthink, sexual repression, and social oppression in general and racism in particular. The courtroom scene directly alludes to To Kill A Mockingbird.
