opens tomorrow. They’re calling  it an inspiring true story and I guess it is in many ways but for me it’s the ultimate fantasy: To be able to try out for a professional football team. Damn! Wouldn’t that be cool?

The movie stars as , a season ticket holder who tried out for the 1976 team after then-rookie head coach announced he would have open tryouts. plays Vermeil and looks uncannily like the young coach.

In 1963 sports writer attended spring training with the and ran a few plays from scrimmage as a quarterback for the team during an exhibition game. Plimpton’s experiences resulted in the book and the movie it was based on, . The stories are obviously simliar but whereas Plimpton’s experience was simply material for a book, Vince Papale was seriously competing for a spot on the roster:

I remember absolutely loving this commerical when it aired during my childhood. First, it’s animated, so that’s good. Then, the villains–the –out to destroy Toothopolis, chant in unison: We make holes in teeth! And finally, at the end, the dog barks out Crest! Crest! Brilliant!
