Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Number One In Boston’s Hood, G
Thursday, February 1st, 2007My favorite animated comedy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, had a guerrilla marketing campaign go awry. If you haven’t heard yet, marketers for ATHF’s upcoming movie placed electronic board in the shape of one of the series’ characters, a Mooninite, around the Boston metropolitan area and some Bostonians thought the LED boards were some kind of IED, apparently.
With calls coming in from pop culturally-cluess citizens, Boston officials implemented homeland security plans. The end result was widespread publicity for the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie–much more so than the guerrilla marketing campaign would’ve garnered–and the twenty-somethings who placed the Mooninites around Boston in jail.
Lame. There was clearly a huge disruption due to the marketing campaign, but really, how could anyone have anticipated people would react that way? Here’s video of the guys placing the Mooninites around Boston (via Brainiac):
